Brian D, Dick D, Tony F, Steve H, Bill H, Henry H, Keith L, Chris L, Paul M, Mike O, Reedis T, John W and Norm W were present. Our special guest was Greg Humphrey.
Greg explained that he is looking for a commissioned build of the B-17F in which his grandfather was copilot. He wants to display it in flight, so wheels up, bomb bay closed. His preference is 1/32 scale, and he has identified a kit available, as well as decals from his grandfather’s squadron and a source for 3-d printed props in motion. The finish would be olive drab, no battle damage, minimal weathering. There was a lot of discussion about taking on the project. The consensus was that we could take it on a as a group project, with several members taking on specific portions of the build. Anyone interested in participating in this commission needs to notify Dick by Wednesday, June 17; he will then confirm things with Greg.
Greg went on to describe being a part of a WWII parachute jump organization which gives demonstrations around the country and beyond, jumping from a vintage C-47. This led to lots of conversation.
Vice-pres report: Tony reported arrangements for a table and 4 passes for the Capital City Comic Con are confirmed.
Treasurer report: Mike reported that, after paying for the convention Journal ad, our balance is $729.
R4 Coordinator: Chris had no update re: Region 4 activity.
Upcoming events: Dick reminded that the Tim Ridout Challenge is a week from Saturday, on June 13. There was some discussion describing this informal event among 4 clubs in the area. Dick explained this year CAMS is responsible for registration, which includes signing people in and taking registration, then tallying the totals from the popular vote. He noted that proceeds from registration and raffle are divided up among the 4 clubs. Several plan to attend. Dick asked those willing to help with registration to arrive by noon.
Dick noted that, for those not going to Grand Rapids, AFK Games is offering a Skin Tone Workshop on June 13, which may be of interest to those painting figures.
Dick reported a nice day at the Ignition Makers Fest, May 16. We had lots of visitors, giving away flyers, newsletters and P-39 kits. Dick sent out emails to folks who provided an address, inviting them to visit our web presence and come to a meeting. Build night on May 20 at Tanuki’s had 5 attended, where we met Greg. The next build night is June 17 at Evolution Games. We set July 15 for a build night at AFK Games; Dick said he would confirm with them and notify members.
There was lots of discussion about the upcoming Convention. Chris reports volunteer sign-up has gone extremely well. Tony added that, should someone be unable to fill their shift, efforts will be made to get another member to take the position, so the club continues to get credit. Chris also reported the Tiger Meet planning is going very well. Dick advised that those not attending convention but willing to place on the Tiger Meet table need to bring their project to the July meeting. He added there will NOT be an August chapter meeting. Chris noted that on Sunday, August 2, he will be loading a trailer with everything that is to be taken to Ft. Wayne on Tuesday, August 4. He asked for volunteers to help with loading the trailer; contact Chris L for specific information.
Chris says he expects the CAMS poker chips to arrive within a couple weeks. In the meantime, he still has a number of the metal tags.
Dick said the invitation to participate in the Lansing Model Railroad Train Show on Nov. 8 had arrived. After some discussion, it was decided the event was not worth the cost and time.
Dick said he forgot to bring the sign-up for Capital City Comic Con in July, but will send it out a.s.a.p. He noted there are still several open shifts on Friday evening and Saturday. This will be our third year. There’s lots of traffic, visiting with people, providing visibility and promoting the club. He asked members to contact him by the July meeting to volunteer.
Dick reviewed that Kevin Epling of Small Scale Pics will be at convention and will be our guest at the September meeting to take more photos of projects.
Also, Norm reminded everyone that the “Thunder and Lightning” group build will conclude at the December holiday party.
Dick reported that William B had spoken to staff at the REOlds Museum about the possibility of displaying Oldsmobile models; several people said they were interested in the project.
And a reminder the Dayton trip to the Air Force Museum, organized by Brad, is September 25-26.
The rest of the evening was devoted to “show and tell,” with several people showing their projects, works-in-progress and tools.
The next meeting is Thursday, July 2. Dick will give a presentation on contest judging.
