July 3, 2025 Minutes

Brian D, Dick D, Tony F, Bill H, Henry H, Chris K, Keith L, Chris L, Jason M, Mike O, Reedis T were present.  Norm W officially joined C.A.M.S. this evening; welcome Norm.  Jason’s wife Heidi was there, as she’s been chauffeuring him since his bike accident.  Heidi spent the evening building a Bandai Pokemon figure; she joined us as a family member and plans on entering the Nationals and Great Lakes Challenge!

Dick noted the only upcoming event on the calendar is the IPMS Nationals in Hampton, VA.  Dick, Tony, Chris K, Chris L, Jason, and Brad are attending.  Chris L reminded that registration is still open and the convention is in need of lots of people willing to volunteer some time.  Dick reminded everyone that, because of the convention, the August C.A.M.S. meeting is rescheduled to Thursday, August 14, at 6:30 p.m.

Tony had no Vice-President report

Chris L said reimbursements have been paid; Silent Auction, proceeds from the Tim Ridout Challenge and Norm’s membership received and the club balance stands at about $600.  As Regional Coordinator for Region 4, he’s been visiting clubs.  He says one club lost its charter for lack of IPMS members.  He’s helping other members working to start a new chapter.

Dick reported several members attended the Tim Ridout Challenge last month.  Though we won no awards, the afternoon was enjoyable and C.A.M.S. received $51 as the share of proceeds.  He attended the memorial service for Mike Hood, as did members from West Michigan and Kalamazoo, with whom Mike had a long relationship.  Dick had forwarded a photo of the flowers from C.A.M.S., which the family appreciated, and he forwarded the email reporting an auction of Mike’s “stash” would be in the future; he will notify members as he gets news.  He also encouraged everyone to review the spreadsheet forwarded from Martin Schultz of the Kalamazoo club.  Martin is assisting in the estate of a former Kalamazoo member, and he will be a vendor at the Great Lakes Challenge in October.

The next build night is scheduled for July 17 at Tanuki’s Trading Post; we will start gathering around 6 p.m.  Tanuki’s has additional display space on its shelves, so builders are encouraged to bring finished projects to loan for the display; Dick will have identification display cards available.  The August build night is set for August 27 at the Lansing Makers’ Network.  There was discussion about scheduling an evening at Hoplite Games.  The consensus was that, if we can reserve a long table for the evening, we would schedule a build night there on September 17.  Dick will confer with Rick, the owner of Hoplite about this.

There was little news re: the National Guard project.  Mike O is struggling to find a UH-72A Lakota.  Dick has a UH-60A on order.

The Capital City Comic Con is next week.  Chris L agreed to take the last 2 open slots on Sunday.  Dick and Chris K will arrive early Friday afternoon to do set-up. Mike O and Henry will have the first shift Friday evening.  Folks manning the table are encouraged to bring projects to display.  Chris K will have newsletters, Dick will have business cards.

The next area show/competition is the Great Lakes Challenge in Grand Rapids on October 4.  It was agreed to sponsor an award.  Dick described the 2023 event, explaining that there were various presentations/demonstrations throughout the day for attendees, and that IPMS West Michigan is interested in having C.A.M.S. members give some of those presentations.  Chris K explained that conversations with West Michigan have been around helping them with their event, for which, in turn, they will help us when we hold our first event.  Chris L and Tony said they would be willing to give a presentation.  Dick will solicit other presenters and pass this information on to West Michigan.

Chris K is working on coordinating a hands-on presentation on figure painting for the September meeting.

In October Tony will give a demonstration on constructing diorama trees.

There was some discussion about sprue cutters, their strengths and weaknesses, and where to find them.

Dick showed his completed Boulton Paul Defiant (top left below).  Mike O brought a Devastator in flight (bottom left).  Reedis is working on two Gundams (top right).  Jason explained there is an on-line gundam competition with a theme of “summer”; he’s finishing a figure done in colors reminiscent of a “Super Soaker” water gun, and talked about the laquer paints used (bottom center).  Norm showed his nearly-completed F-106, with tractor and power cart, and described painting the stripes and decalling the weapon payload (top center).

As noted, the next meeting is Thursday, August 14.  The “topic” will be a report on the IPMS National Convention.
