Aircraft Top Entries At Region IV Show

Aircraft saw the most entries but a ship took Best in Show at the IPMS/US Region IV show last month, club member Hyeon-Jung “HJ” Yun told the club in his presentation on the competition at the April CAMS meeting.

The show had 458 entries (HJ counted them himself), of which 166 were aircraft, 83 were figures and only 22 were ships, but a copy of the USS Hancock took Best in Show.

The show displayed some incredible craftsmanship and painting , HJ said, including the plane below that was hand-painted.

The Region IV show might be a goal for some CAMS members in 2025.

HJ also reported on his visit to Hobby Fair 2024 at the Korea Institute of Design Promotion. While not a competition, he said the show included some incredible work as well as some of the top model vendors in the world. Academy, for instance, is headquartered in South Korea.

Among the highlights was this largely scratch-built U-boat.

In addition to HJ’s presentation, Brad Shafer described the work he has done to detail his F-4 Phantom. On the exterior, he described using “cloud painting” to create shadows and weathering. The technique involves slowly adding layers of lighter paint in swirls over a darker background. For the interior, he has used ANYZ accessories to provide buttons and switches not included on the kit details.

Chris Long showed the work he has done on his 1/25 scale Peterbuilt 359. He praised the fitment of the base kit, but said he is adding numerous 3-D printed and scratch-built elements to customize the truck.

John Wojnar showed the work he has done on his 1/16 scale M10 tank including interior detail and Mike Orris displayed a Coast Guard boat and a 1/72 scale USAAF trainer he completed.
